The Presence of Form

Artist’s Statement

Every day the dogs and I go walking.

Sometimes it’s the beach, sometimes it’s the bush and sometimes there is time to sit beneath a tree and draw. Time to be still, to see how the landscape moves and changes, the quieter I become the more the stillness moves.

The question I ask myself each day is, what am I experiencing. How can my work become that experience?

In my studio I have the dogs, my walk, and my drawings with me as I start to build my surfaces. The tangle of the bush, the interruption of tree trunks, the wind across the water, the rising tide, the slow growth, the flash of flowering, and the horizon line anchoring the view.

The line of my forms reaches for the sky while the base remains rooted to the ground. By using forms that are part of our long human history, we don’t need to think about how the bottle fits into our hands, a connection to form as ancient as our connection to the land.

The tiles are a celebration of building a surface, exploring how to tell the story in a different way.

The days continue, walking, drawing, making, trying always to translate the experience of “the still point in a turning world”
